"Pagsilay ng Bagong Pag-asa! - Isang Kuwento ng JFC-"
SYNOPSIS
Children make simple dreams and are hopeful for what lies
ahead. But their innocence and youth are inevitably challenged
by the circumstances beyond their control. Still, they rightfully
deserve to enjoy every right they are blessed with as they
hold on to the promise of a better tomorrow despite the odds.
Such is the kind of life of Tsuyoshi and his sisters, Risa
and Anna, as depicted in "Pagsilay ng Bagong Pag-asa!
~ Isang Kuwento ng JFC~", Teatro Akebono's latest production
for the year 2002.
In the absence of their father, these three Japanese-Filipino
children (JFCs) grew up under the care of their mother, Tessa,
who has to make both ends meet as a single parent. Tsuyoshi
helps her, though, by doing part-time work as newspaper and
shoe shine boy. While Risa, the eldest, performs well in school
and vows to raise their family from poverty. Anna is the youngest,
the usual sweet, caring and obedient daughter and sister.
Young as they are, the road which these children take is
not easy, though. Despite the perseverance they have shown,
there remains an ardent desire to meet their Japanese father.
More so, the mere thought of being different from their peers,
as children of mixed parentage, already leads them to an agonizing
journey where one's strength and belief greatly matters. And
as Development Action for Women Network (DAWN) joins in their
journey, the more they see the coming of a new day that brings
hope to their young minds and hearts.
DAWN is an organization that assists Filipino women returnees
from Japan and their JFCs that they may find their place in
the society and redirect their lives despite an unwanted past
and what seemed to be a hopeless future.
In "Pagsilay ng Bagong Pag-asa! ~ Isang Kuwento ng JFC~,"
DAWN intervenes into the lives of Tsuyoshi, Risa and Anna
not to merely inform them of their rights but to actually
give them what they truly deserve --- the right to have a
happy home, the right to be accepted and to belong, the right
to enjoy and play, the right to learn and hone skills, and
most importantly, the right to hope and dream that there's
a brighter tomorrow awaiting them. Not to mention the fact
that their mother is also given the same opportunity to assert
her own rights as well. And together they rebuild their lives
and face the dawning of a new day with a brighter perspective,
more ready and willing to brave the odds, while the children
remain hopeful for that much-awaited moment to be with their
Japanese father. Proving that, indeed, nothing still compares
to having a complete family that they can proudly call their
very own.
Vision of Teatro Akebono
Teatro Akebono is DAWN's theater group of women and JFC and
has been one of the organization's advocacy projects since
1997. Through the group's theatrical presentation, the women
and children are able to express themselves, regain their
self-confidence, and hone their acting and singing skills
as part of their reintegration process. Most importantly,
they are given the chance to share with the local and international
audiences the social issues affecting them through which they
are able to also advocate the rights they rightfully deserve.
Japan tour of Teatro AKEBONO has been conducted for five
years. It also has given the opportunities for the children
to see their Japanese fathers or relatives. In last year ,
5 children could meet their fathers in the different prefecture.
This year, AKEBONO presentation will be held in Fukuoka, Kobe,
Osaka, Urawa (Saitama), Numata (Gunma), Joetsu (Niigata) and
Tokyo.
