Have you always wanted to learn about computers and the internet at the time and place convenient to you? Don’t fret, TAC-K is the answer! TAC-K or the Tuloy Aral Center Kompyuter is an on-going literacy program of the Science and Technology Advisory Council-Japan Chapter (STAC-J) which aims to provide training in computer technology to Filipino migrants here in Japan. The students of this program consist of overseas Filipino workers and spouses of Japanese citizens based in Tokyo and vicinities. There is no minimum educational requirement for any of the courses. Now accepting applicants for its 19th batch this year 2008, TAC-K will offer short term courses on Basic Computer and Internet, Spreadsheet and Database, Web Page Design and Authoring and Hardware. Each course will be divided into 10 weekly sessions at 2 hours per session and can start this March or as soon as a group of 3 students will be formed. Classes will be given by Filipino S and T professionals and students experienced in IT. Learning will be hands-on and each student will be provided with his or her own learning kit, free of charge. What’s more, classes are offered on weekends (Saturdays or Sundays) and in the following locations: Meguro (in cooperation with OFW-Shien Cooperative), Odaiba, Ookayama and Shinagawa in Tokyo, Chiba and Yokohama; so there will always be a TAC-K class nearest you.

TAC-K has been going on since 1999 along with the other computer training programs by STAC-J as a move to help Filipinos improve their work performance to secure better jobs or higher posts while in Japan, gain confidence in utilizing present technologies, establish a better image in Japan, prioritize better skills-training for productivity and prepare for their return to the Philippines. On the other hand, proceeds generated from the training program are used to fund its other projects particularly the Undergraduate Research Grant or URG, where deserving S & T research proposals made by college students in the Philippines are given funds. Hence, while enhancing your computer skills you are also helping other people through STAC-J’s programs. As the former president of STAC-J (2007), Mudjekeewis D. Santos would say, “sa TAC-K may natutunan ka na, nakatulong ka pa!”
