DAVAO CITY, Oct. 25 (PNA) – Vice presidential candidate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano remains hopeful that Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will change his mind and seek the presidency – not for himself but for the country.

In an interview with Davao media Saturday, Cayetano said that he can still see some chances in Duterte’s heart that he can be convinced to run for president.

“Ang tingin ko mayroong, maliit na maliit na pinto na pwedeng buksan na siyay lumaban bilang pangulo ng ating bansa. Pero kailangan maramdaman niya continuously ang clamor ng mga tao, kailangan makita niya na binubuksan ni Lord ang pinto (As I see it there is a small door that you can open that he can vie for president of our country. But he needs to feel the continued clamor of the people, he needs to see that the Lord is opening the door for him),” Cayetano said.

Cayetano said he will remain hopeful until the mayor has a final decision, come December 10.

“There is still hope, unang-una there is legal hope kasi hanggang December 10 pa to (First there is legal hope because it is still until December 10). I am confident that the COMELEC (Commission on Election) will not only look at the candidate, Mr. (Martin) Diño, but will look at the party,”

“Yung sinasabing lilinisan yung nuisance candidate, pag may national party na kasama, hindi mo pwedeng basta nalang i-disqualify yun. Unang-una mayroon hanggang December 10 na substitution, mapagbibintangan ang administrasyon na sinisira ang pinto sa mga kalaban, kung tatanggalin nila ang (They are saying to clear the nuisance candidate, if there is a national party, you cannot just disqualify that. First there’s until December 10 for substitution, the administration will be accused of destroying the doors for the opponents if they are going to get rid of) PDP-Laban (Partidong Demokratikong Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan),” Cayetano said.

He also explained that there should be no legal issues if Duterte will substitute Diño, specifically with the party system in the country. According to him, Duterte is a member of both PDP-Laban and his local based party Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, and that the COMELEC should put into consideration the spirit of the law.

“The spirit of the law will tell you that every natural born Filipino and as long as you are 40 years old and above, you’ve been in the country for 10 years, you can run as president, however there is a deadline. The deadline will be on December 10 as long as you have a party,” the senator said.

The senator though admits that he understands the position of Duterte in seeking a re-election and choosing his family over the presidency.

Like Duterte, he said he was in a position before when he needs to choose his family first before anything else. (PNA)
