PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, July 18 (PNA) — The City Veterinary Office (CVO) here is closely monitoring the hygiene and sanitation of backyard poultry farms in Barangay Salvacion to determine the cause of more fowl deaths recorded recently.
Puerto Princesa veterinarian Dr. Indira Santiago said the strict monitoring was ordered after 86 of the total 140 domestic fowls that were reported to have died were from Salvacion.
Santiago said Friday that she believes they died due to salmonellosis, a bacterial infection caused by the breed of salmonella that occurs in human and animals, and usually causes diarrhea.
In poultry, the disease is usually without symptoms. The salmonella lives in the intestinal tracts of animals, including domestic fowls.
The city veterinarian also said the deaths may also be caused by the “sudden change in the weather.”
This is contrary to earlier reports that they were struck by New Castles Disease.
“We are also investigating the possibility that they were infected by the chickens from the poultry farms in neighboring barangays,” she pointed out.
Santiago added that they have already taken samples to determine the cause of the infections.
“We will distribute anti-biotic to the farmers to ensure that their poultry will not be infected,” she said.(PNA)
