CALBAYOG CITY, Samar, July 7 (PNA) -– The city government here asked residents not to be complacent at any time because disaster happens at the least expected time with great devastation.
In a short program on Monday, July 6 at the city hall compound in line with the city’s observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month, Mayor Ronaldo Aquino underscored the importance of instilling in the minds of local residents pro-active approach to disasters.
Aquino also challenged the local disaster risk reduction and management office to give more emphasis on identifying and assessing the different hazards that villagers are exposed to.
However, he stressed that it is everyone’s responsibility to lessen the impact of a hazard or any disaster, likewise, achieve zero casualty.
A motorcade followed after the launching program that signaled the start of this city-wide undertaking, which aims to heighten awareness about disasters.
This will be culminated with a yearly activity called “the Barangay (village) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Mini-Jamboree” which is now on its 3rd year.
The participating villages in this activity will be provided inputs by a pool of facilitators from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, City Health Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, Maritime Industry Authority, and the Philippine Coast Guards about rescue techniques.
July is declared National Disaster Consciousness Month by virtue of Executive Order No. 137, signed in August 1999 by then President Joseph Estrada.
This year’s theme is “Pamilya at Pamayanang Handa, Katuwang sa Pag-unlad ng Bansa.” (PNA)
