Dagupan mayor issues alert vs red tide

DAGUPAN CITY, March 7 (PNA) — Mayor Belen Fernandez has alerted the City Agriculture Office (CAO) to take appropriate measures in view of the bulletin issued Thursday by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) that the coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda, Pangasinan are now contaminated by paralytic shellfish poisoning or red tide toxin.

The mayor was alarmed because some of the fishes and shellfishes being sold in the Dagupoan Fish Market are coming all the way from Bolinao and Anda, thus the need to thoroughly check the miscellaneous invoices of every truck coming to Dagupan to find the source of their cargo.

All types of shellfish gathered from the two towns are not safe for human consumption. However, the coastal waters of Alaminos and Wawa, Bani remained free from red tide.

City Agriculturist Emma Molina said that fish, squid, shrimp and crabs are safe provided that they are washed thoroughly and their internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before they are cooked. (PNA)
