Putin declares 22nd Winter Olympic Games open

SOCHI, Feb. 8 (PNA/ITAR-TASS) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi open.

“I declare the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi open,” he said at the opening ceremony that was attended by 40,000 spectators.

Taking part in the Sochi Games are 3,000 athletes and 3,000 members of delegations from 88 nations of the world.

A total of 98 sets of medals will be awarded upon the results of competitions. Broadcasts from Sochi will be watched by an estimated 3 billion spectators around the programs.

Live coverage will be done by 90 radio and TV broadcasting companies for audiences in 123 countries. (PNA/Itar-Tass)
