Foot notes

BAGS, shoes, stockings, jewelry and scarves are all accessories but the most important of them all are shoes or footwear. Common sense tells us that, compared to the other accessories, one can't possibly leave his/her room without any footwear -- unless you're an infant riding a stroller or a bum. But like the other accessories, shoes can compliment, enhance or destroy your wardrobe. Shoes can also ruin your day when they are ill fitting or are about to fall apart. Worse is when, in haste, you discover that they don't match!

How you care for your shoes and what type of shoes you wear also tell a lot about your personality. Your dirty shoes shout you give little importance to grooming or you have poor self-esteem. The three-inch high-heeled shoes you wear with your rugged attire bemoans that you are an overdresser. (Studies reveal that those from lower-class backgrounds are three times more likely to overdress. Those who are poorly educated also tend to overdress).

What do local and foreign fashion experts advice on shoes?

  • Invest in comfortable and durable shoes. You save more money and time when you buy quality shoes. Besides, quality does not necessarily mean expensive.
  • Shoes must always fit you well and in good condition for walking. Also, make sure that you know how to walk in them! Stilettos may be pretty but tripping in them would be disastrous.
  • Throw away shoes which are beyond repair, have lost their shape, or whose leather is peeling.
  • Clean or shine your shoes at all times. Don't stand out in grimy, dirty or worn-out shoes.
  • The basic rule in shoe color is shoes should be the same intensity or darker than the hemline. Never wear black stockings with white shoes, please, unless you are performing in a theatre!
  • The best shoes for the office employee and the businesswoman is a plain, dark colored pump, with closed toes and heels (about 1-inch high). Colors tested best for office are black, dark brown, gray and blue.
  • Correct shoes for evening wear are made of silk, satin, brocade, velvet or suede. Leather shoes are best worn during the day.
  • The basic pairs of shoes each woman must have:
o Loafers or flat sandals for casual wear
o Medium heeled shoes for day wear
o Slingback sandals or other higher heeled shoes for evening wear
    o Rubber shoes for sportswear.
  • Those with nice legs and medium width feet may wear any type of shoes.
  • Those with heavy legs or thick ankles must take note that delicate shoes and sandals, ankle straps and T-bar shoes will further emphasize the calves and ankles.
  • Substantial shoes, dark colored shoes and broadly strapped sandals make calves and ankles appear smaller.
  • Closed toe shoes give the illusion of length and make legs sexy and alluring.
  • Lastly, view yourself in a full-length mirror to see the effect of your shoes on your total appearance. Shoes must complement or enhance your wardrobe and personality.*
