Toku's kind of jazz

by Hideo Kawakami

Since his debut in 2000, jazz singer Toku continues to rise in popularity mainly among female fans because of his one-of-a-kind, sweet, low vocals, aside from being an adept frugel hone player. On June 19 this year, Sony Records will release his third original album entitled Chemistry of Love.

World-renowned jazz fusion artist Michael Franks penned the title song Chemistry of Love, which is also the album’s centerpiece song, especially for Toku (Sony/SICP157). Producing the album is John Simon, who is joined by top-class American jazz musicians, namely Kenny Baron (piano), Ron Carter (base), Grady Tate (drums). The album is being recorded in New York.

Born in 1973, Toku, who turned 29 this year, is one of the driving forces of Japan’s new-age jazz together with Kobayashi Kei. Even in his childhood, he reportedly showed a precocious musical genius.

The first instrument he got hold of was a cornet when he joined the wind music club in junior high school. He also became a member of the high school band. A Miles Davis number that he performed in a university festival riveted a jazz drummer in the crowd and won him an invitation to a livehouse, which in turn started him on the road to professional jazz.

While studying for about a year in the US, he was scouted while performing in a livehouse. He had his CD debut in January last year. In August of the same year, he performed in Blue Note Tokyo, much admired by Japanese jazz musicians, and further honed his talent there. These days, he performs with Ken Hirai and Mariko Takahashi.

His vocals in English, acquired in native soil, still lacks the charmed refinement that usually goes with age, but its wet and sensual quality evokes urban shades.

Chemistry of Love shows a polished quality that can match even Michael Frank’s representative hit, Antonio’s Song, in its sheer sensuality. A song never to miss, this album also establishes the artist as one to look forward to 10 years later.
