Bahay Kubo Research

The longest-running, most widely-read newspaper for Filipinos in Japan

Florida state, arts and culture, anti-WEF demo at Winter Olympics

FLORIDA -- Napunta ako last January sa Florida. Not used to it ang mga mokong. Ngiting kalabaw lamang kami. Hehehe...

The warm Florida winds greeted us (kami ni misis) paglabas pa lang ng airport. Florida is situated in the southernmost tip of the eastern United States. It is like an appendix hanging off the mainland. It faces both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Tropics ang init, so walang snow. Walang winter, autumn or spring. Lahat summer. Parang Pilipinas. So Florida is the point of destination of tourists and people who intend to enjoy their retirement from work. Maraming Adult Retirement Facilities kaya talagang contrasting ang number of old and aged population.

Subalit low taxes naman, and the desire to spend is not that great, as there's not much stores that offer alternative lifestyle, clothing, etc. Typical American na way of life.

ARTS AND CULTURE -- Sa isang migranteng manggagawa na tulad ng kalahatan sa amin dito sa Nweba York, moving to Florida is something that needs to be decided upon slowly and carefully. In Florida kasi, the Americanization of a Filipino migrant ay mas napapadali. Florida, I noticed, is far different from the rest of the United States. Mas malayo ang istilo compared to New York. New York is the melting pot of the world. The train of entry of immigrants shifted from Western and Eastern European to Hispanics, and now to Asians, at Pacific Islanders and West Africans.

Because of this cultural mix, parang mas nakikita mo ang kabuuan at kalahatan ng mundo dahil these fellow migrants also bring their native culture, music, culinary arts, native lores, etc. There's a lot of festivals and street fairs in New York, especially during summer and flea markets showcasing vintage collectibles from other countries among others. Isa pang pagpapatunay nito ang aking last column tackling Pinoy underground bands dito sa New York/New Jersey area.

Big and small, specializing in arts and history. Hayag na ang Metropolitan Museum (Mets), Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), Historical Museum, American Indian Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Children's Museum, Lincoln Center for the Arts, Asia Society, American Folk Arts Museum, etc. Kung ikaw ay naghahanap ng butas, on how to enrich your mind with different historical finds and the arts, talagang pipirmi ka sa New York. No wonder na New York was called "Arts and Culture Capital of the World".

I can list Jose Garcia Villa - national artist as one. He died recently in his apartment sa Greenwich Village. Curently, Filipino writers and poets like Eric Gamalinda, Bino Realuyo, Luis Cabalquinto, Luis Francia, Jessica Hagedorn, etc. also thrive fairly well dito.

Keep on reading, keep on studying. Aside from the chain of bookstores, there are lots of second hand bookshops, and specialty bookstores, too. Even the elusive Anarchists got their own bookshop where they sell books, magazines and propaganda materials.

WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM -- Napag-usapan ang mga anarchists. Marami sila dito last week sa New York. May mga pinoy at fil-ams din na nagparticipate condemning the encrouchment and intervention of US Military sa Pilipinas in guise of VFA (Visiting Forces Agreement) at Balikatan.

Nagmistulang Police State under Martial Law ang Manhattan. So the right to protest and display a different opinion was curtailed ng bahagya.

Anarchy is a political school of thought na nagbuhat pa nu'ng early 18th century. But that is a very deep discussion na hindi ko na ma-cover dito.

WINTER OLYMPICS NGAYON SA UTAH (As of this writing). *
