STAC-J promotes science and technology in Japan

A group of Filipino Monbusho (Japanese Ministry of Education) scholars and expatriates have organized themselves to promote and support the upliftment of the science and technology of the Philippines. Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC)-Japan is the lone active chapter of the STACs worldwide.

The incumbent president is Egay Aban, a Ph.D. student at Chiba University with a major in Biology while its incumbent vice-president is Ms. Tonet Tanchuling, who is another Ph.D. student at the Tokyo Institute of Technology with major in environmental engineering.

STAC-J's ongoing projects are Tuloy-Aral Center, Undergraduate Research Grant, Database and Confab. Tuloy-Aral Center, or TAC, is an ongoing literacy program of the Science and Technology advisory Council-Japan (STAC-J) with the purpose of training Filipino migrants in Japan in the areas of entrepreneurship and computer technology. TAC-Kompyuter is its computer technology training component. It was handled for a long time by Mr. Arnold de Guzman who is an engineer in one prominent engineering consultancy firm in Tokyo and is likewise the present treasurer of the organization.

Students of this program include domestic helpers, entertainers, construction workers, working professionals and Filipino Japanese spouses. Open to all Filipinos, the program has helped more than 500 Filipino migrants.

STAC-Japan is encouraging the formation of like-minded groups in areas that are not presently served by the organization.

A website was prepared by Mr. Noriel Tiglao, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Tokyo with majorin civil engineering. You may visit this site at: www.stacj.org. *
