Since assuming office in April this year, Prime Minister Junichiro
Koizumi has boosted the cabinet approval rating to more than 80
percent, gained landslide victory for his party at the Metropolitan
Tokyo assembly elections, and now, a charity album entitled, "My
Favorite Elvis Songs -- Junichiro Koizumi Selections/Elvis Presley
(BMG Fanhouse/BVC-31082)" is hitting the charts since its
release nationwide on August 22.
Including X-Japan hits and the real opera, among other kinds
of music, Koizumi's profound knowledge of music is widely known
to the ordinary Japanese through the mass media.
With this background, a plan was hatched to introduce songs of
his choice, which led to the hasty release of the best hits of
Elvis Presley whom he had closely followed as a youngster.
Koizumi's first encounter with Elvis dates back to his high school
days. What especially left a strong impression on the youth was
the song, "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" which
is topbilled in this selection.
In May, when the Elvis Fan Club paid a courtesy call on him,
he gave this message, "Since I became the prime minister,
I have been engrossed in intense work that I almost have no time
to sleep. But on weekends when I listen to the voice of Elvis,
I am easily lulled into a relaxed mood. Especially these past
few days, Elvis' gospel songs penetrate my heart and heal it.
I think the Elvis voice is a great treasure of the 20th century,
and it's a waste if such wonderful music is appreciated only by
as a small segment of his fans. I would like the younger generation
to listen to it, too."
According to the BMG Fan House, part of the proceeds from the
sale of this album will be donated to the Chuokyodobokin-kai for
the less fortunate members of society. The plan was to make use
of the combined power of both Koizumi and Presley to create a
product that will be used to contribute to social welfare. The
CD contains 25 songs and pre-tax price is 2427 yen. *
