Making good on a promise
Can
Japan help?
HOUSEKEEPING a perennially chaotic nation made
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo travel-shy in her first
six months in office. Unlike her predecessors whose first
itinerary upon assumption of office was to pay homage to the
country's main aid donors and economic partners--the US and
Japan--Arroyo has chosen to stay home.

Asia's first republic is second to the last,
a mere notch higher than Bangladesh and below previously war-torn
Vietnam in growth performance. As Asia's basket case, the
Philippines is wallowing in poverty, corruption, mediocrity,
divisiveness, crime and internal strife. This is the country
and people that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo rallied in her recent
State of the Nation Address (SONA) before the 12th Congress.

KANJI
of the WEEK |
|
Japanese writing involves the use of three major
groups of characters, namely, Kanji, Hiragana,
and Katakana. Kanji is the Chinese character used
in Japan. Anybody trying to learn Japanese would
understand the difficulty of trying to memorize
the characters, let alone the dozens of compound
words involving these. Starting with the "Joyo"
or basic characters, PT will feature these characters
one by one in this special section, including
how to write the characters, mnemonic devices
for easy memorization, as well as word examples.
Let's have fun studying Japanese!
