Survey
shows less than half of Filipinos use banks to remit money
Five years after two Philippine banks were granted license to operate
as full banks in Japan, half of the Filipinos surveyed by the Philippines
Today still use personal, and sometimes underground, means of sending
money to their families in the Philippines.
One hundred eight respondents from northern Japan (Fukushima, Aomori,
Iwate, Yamagata, Hokkaido and Miyagi) were interviewed by telephone
from July 10 to 25. Results indicate that the awareness of Philippine
banks among Filipino residents, particularly in the rural areas
covered by the survey, stands below 50% of the population.
Remittances coursed through the banking system are reflected in
the statistics compiled by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which
currently stands at US$ 6 billion from all over the world.
The on-going survey is part of a series of market research studies
of the publication.*
