Overseas Filipino youth invited to immersion trip
The Commission on Filipinos Overseas, through the Philippine
Embassy in Tokyo, is inviting Filipino youth overseas to participate
in this year's Lakbay-Aral.
The Lakbay-Aral program is a two-week study visit to the
Philippines designed to raise awareness and appreciation among
overseas Filipino youth, of the country's rich historical
and cultural heritage. The program includes lectures on Philippine
history, culture and language, guided tours to scenic and
historical landmarks, interaction with Filipino students,
government officials and indigenous communities, and participation
in traditional festivities. It is also designed to rekindle
the interest of Filipino youth overseas in their country of
origin.
This year's Lakbay-Aral is scheduled on July 21 to August
5, and will be concentrated in the Luzon area. Participation
fee is US$800 which will cover all inland transportation,
food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), hotel accommodation, special
tour packages, as well as accident and medical insurance for
the duration of the program. The program fee does not cover
international airfare to and from Manila. The itinerary and
schedule, however, may be revised in consideration of particular
interests of prospective participants.

Nominations for 2002 Presidential Awards accepted
The Philippine Embassy announced the closing of the nomination
for the Year 2002 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals
and Organizations Overseas. Awarding rites will be held in
Manila in December this year.
The Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Private
Organizations Overseas was institutionalized by virtue of
Executive Order No. 498 issued on December 19, 1991.
The five categories are: Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino (LINKAPIL)
Award, for Filipino associations or individuals for their
exceptional or significant contribution to the reconstruction,
progress and development in the Philippines; Kaakbay ng Bayan
Award, for Filipino communities, federations or groups overseas
who have purposely united for the common objective of providing
assistance or support for the reconstruction, progress and
development; Banaag Award, for Filipinos and foreign individuals
or associations for their contributions which have significantly
benefited a sector or community in the Philippines, or advanced
the cause of overseas Filipino communities; and Pamana ng
Pilipino Award, for Filipinos overseas who, in exemplifying
the talent and industry of the Filipino, have brought the
country honor and recognition through excellence and distinction
in the pursuit of their work or profession. *
