No Philippines Today article in recent times generated as
much positive responses as last issues Purely
Self-Made: An Interview with Dr. Joey Santos, a
story that shows us that perseverance and hard work triumph
over poverty. A few excepts:
Upon reading such things, my admiration for one
of my teachers grew. Its impact is far more inspiring than
any of the lessons I learned in the classroom. I am so thankful
to God for sending someone like Mr. Joey Santos to light up
a dim world of desperation and grief
I am challenged
to also respond to my God-given purpose in life
Thank
you for your inspiration.

Your article at Philippines Today was more than
a science or nature article
Yes, the papers we publish
in science or nature could be a game-changing communication
to the scientist out there who are hoping to change life,
or rather make life as easy as they can think of... But the
article about you is a life-changing story itself... And I
am sure anybody who reads that article will impact a person's
life in any ways possible...

Joey's outstanding accomplishments in spite of big
handicaps due to poverty should serve as an inspiration to
all, particularly those similarly situated. It is admirable
too how Joey has remained ever so humble. It is also worth
noting Joey's intention to return to our country. I hope that
those similarly blessed with talents and outstanding qualification
would take note and consider how they could contribute toward
the development of our country and the upliftment of our countrymen
from poor quality of life. Your article ought to be widely
circulated. More power.

Once I opened the page, I could not stop reading
up to the end. It is really an extraordinary story that I
didn't know. I feel very much honored and happy to be acquainted
with this talented chemist, a son of a great mother of a poor
family in Malinao Ilaya. Your article must encourage and inspire
the Filipino youth, especially those boys and girls living
in the countryside with a fervent wish to study but little
facilities. It will be a big present for them if you
one day come back to teach in the Philippines.
