Mar Roxas meets Philippine
press in Japan
 |
|
Sec. Mar Roxas
|
Mar Roxas, the secretary of the Department
of Trade and Industry, who was with Pres. Gloria Arroyo's
entourage to Japan last Dec. 2, met selected Philippine media
representatives on Dec. 4 in Tokyo for an interview to be
aired on ABS-CBN.
Arroyo's chief pitchman for foreign
investments and trade fielded a variety of questions ranging
from the country's IT plans, negotiations for the opening
of caregiver market in Japan, and investment opportunities
for the overseas Filipino workers. Roxas said that the country
is positioning itself for a competitive advantage in the information
technology investments, rather than in labor-intensive industries,
by increased infrastructure investments in telecommunications
and in the planned link-up of Clark and Subic through a highway
bypass. He officiated the Philippine IT exhibition in Tokyo
during his brief stay, which was well-attended by Japanese
clients.
He also outlined government investment and
reintegration programs for OFW's, in response to a question
raised on how to funnel overseas remittances to economic activities
other than consumption.
Roxas was recognized this year with the Lee
Kuan Yew Fellowship award by the government of Singapore,
the 16th to be honored since the fellowship was established
ten years ago. Asiaweek also identified Roxas "as one
of the young leaders in politics and business who will bring
Asia and the Pacific to the forefront of world affairs."
Aside from the Philippines Today, Silangan
Shinbun, Kumusta Magazine, KMC and Philippine Digest comprised
Roxas' panel of interviewers.*
